Today starts the beginning of my 16-week challenge. For the next 16 weeks I will be working out 6 days a week, 3 days running the other 3 cross training. My goal at the end of the 16 weeks is to be able to run a 1/2 marathon in under 2 hours, hold a forearm plank for 5 minutes and do 25 push-ups with no breaks.
Part of this challenge is also for me to break out of my usual box. I pretty much let fear dictate my life, always have. As I’ve recently started to do some self-reflection, I believe that my fear is really just that I’m afraid at not being good at something. I don’t want to look foolish if I try something new and I’m not good at it. No more! Who cares if I look stupid and can’t do something very well, at least I’m trying.
My friend, Callie, invited me to go to 9 Rounds 30 minute Kickbox Fitness in Huntington Beach. The gym workout is 30 minutes of circuit training with a focus on kickboxing style moves. There are 9 stations and each station is 3 minutes followed by a 30-second active recovery. For instance tonight I had to punch a speed bag for 3 minutes followed by 30 seconds of cross-legged crunches. Here’s Mike taking on the speed bag. It takes some coordination but it’s pretty fun.
Other moves included side kicks, rear kicks, lunges, jump rope, etc. The workout changes everyday so it’s a new experience each time you come. There is a trainer there to help you understand all of the moves and bell rings letting you know when it’s time to move to the next station. Before I knew it the 30 minutes was over and I was dripping with sweat. Plus it was super fun wearing pink boxing gloves (it’s ok guys you get black). I will definitely be adding this workout once a week or every other week. You can get monthly memberships but they also offer drops in classes where you simply pay $10.00 per class with no commitment. That works perfect for me because I have so many other fitness gyms I’m dying to try. We said a big thank you to our trainer Mario and took a photo to capture our awesome experience. Super fun and great for any fitness level.
